Herland, published in 1915, tells the story of three American men, Van Jennings, Terry Nicholson, and Jeff Margrave, who embark on an expedition to an uncharted society made up entirely of women. On their journey, the men’s preconceived ideas about women and their place in society are challenged. Herland offers a critique of American ideas about gender roles and relations; the capacities, interests, and abilities of women; and the assumptions of capitalism.
